Top Small Screen Selections: Seven Essential Motion Pictures In the Days Ahead

Pick of the Week

The Substance Film

The filmmaker's daring commentary examines the demanding standards for female beauty along with the perceived horrors of growing older. Hollywood star Demi Moore presents an inspired acting turn as Elisabeth, a 50-year-old actress demoted to hosting an aerobics show on television. Forced aside due to her slimy boss her manager Harvey, she seeks out an enigmatic and terrifying procedure titled "The Substance". This generates a younger clone named Sue, culminating in a progressively vampiric relationship between them. Friday 17 October, Paramount Plus

The Woman in Cabin 10 Film

This classic whodunit thriller stars the talented actress in the role of Laura, a skilled journalist who takes a break from covering international wars to board a high-end voyage accompanied by a gravely sick wealthy inheritor and philanthropist, her partner, plus additional extremely wealthy passengers. But after an enigmatic female disappears from the ship during the evening and all passengers insists she wasn't real, the reporter's sleuthing skills kick in. Out now, on Netflix

This Supernatural Story

Soderbergh tests his film-making abilities through this innovative paranormal narrative captured wholly through the eyes of the spirit. As a family with Lucy Liu as Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe moves into their recent residence, the camera – as the unseen entity – follows them around. The daughter appears aware of the ghostly being, and it seems protective of her. Yet what is the reason? It's a fun idea that remains concise, featuring a surprise that may be unexpected. Saturday 11 October, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, Sky Cinema Premiere

Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy

Nicolas Cage wholeheartedly adopts his eccentric image via this autobiographical spoof. He acts as an egotistical celebrity named Nicolas Cage who takes on a $1m payday to attend a celebration in Mallorca for the rich Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Recruited by government spies to gather intel on the alleged criminal, Cage's unconventional method comes in handy. Saturday 11 October, prime time, Channel 4

The Black Phone Horror

Scott Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller holds up well without requiring a continuation. Set in the late 70s in Denver, multiple kidnappings has rendered the children on edge. After Finney is kidnapped by the kidnapper and held captive in a dungeon, he anticipates the worst. But the disconnected phone on the wall continues to ring, with spooky callers giving advice, as the prophetic visions from his sibling Gwen could save him. A solid creepfest. October 11th, nighttime, on Film4

The Eyes of Tammy Faye

In the struggle between God and Mammon, the victory is clear for materialism in Michael Showalter's brilliantly over-the-top true story regarding the shamed TV preacher plus her lawbreaking partner. The actor portrays the venal Jim, who states early on, asserting religious justification for riches. He and Tammy Faye set about capitalizing on the people's Christian beliefs. It's a spectacle of tacky decor, excessive cosmetics and insincerity, however the lead actress manages to show the character in a likable light. Next Tuesday, early morning, the Film4 channel

This Espionage Thriller

This period's additional entry from the filmmaker is a spy mystery as tight similar to the collars used by Fassbender's UK spy. He receives a mission to discover a mole among the team from a group of five – one of whom is his own wife. Both actors are experts of calm composure, leading to a delightful mental battle of truth or lie develops. Additional actors take part the intelligent intelligence fun. October 17th, multiple time slots, Sky Cinema Premiere
